The Benedicto College Basic Education’s commitment is captured by its maxim: “Your Child’s Quality Education is Our Mission”. It offers complete preparatory and basic education levels: Pre-school, Elementary and High School. Each level has its unique, special and desired competencies responding both to the academic and social/character developmental needs of each learner.
Goals
The Basic Education aims to fulfill the following goals:
Curriculum and Approach
At the Basic Education of Benedicto College, we strive to develop in our children a compassionate attitude towards others and the environment—and a curiosity with which they go itinerant through life, a prerequisite for higher level thought. We challenge naïve beliefs, provoke questions, invite multiple perspectives, and ultimately stretch our students’ minds, always keeping in mind that every child is unique. If we desire children to understand others’ points of view, values and differences, then we must embrace their differences.
Academic Levels
The Early Years Foundation Stage of Benedicto College clearly identifies six Key Learning Areas (KLAs) used as the foundations for a Nursery program. These are: Communication, Language and Literacy, Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development, Knowledge and Understanding of the World and Creative Development. The BC Nursery program provides a stimulating and educational curriculum of play-based experiences. Children enjoy an atmosphere where sufficient time is given to them to explore, develop ideas and carry out self chosen activities.
Lessons were developed to define the skills presented in the literacy and math learning targets and present benchmarks to guide student learning. Lessons expanded the focus to include literacy, math, science, health, social science, fine arts, technology and social/emotional development. The benchmarks in most of these areas are taught as students are ready and, when appropriate, are related to existing themes.
Benedicto College elementary school curriculum includes fist grade through sixth grade. Instruction in all academic areas is provided by the classroom teacher through a variety of flexible grouping strategies. The individual needs of young learners are met through explicit instruction and differentiation of the enhanced curriculum. There are four major subject areas which are taught in the elementary level. These consist of Integrated Language Arts (ILA), Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Other subjects are likewise being integrated to achieve an enhanced and balanced curriculum. These subjects are Music and Arts, Physical Education, Values, Computer and Technology.
Students entering high school are leaving childhood behind. Intellectually they are ready to meet a rich arts and sciences curriculum, while emotionally they are buffeted by the turbulence of early adolescence. They think in polarities and long to understand their world. The curriculum meets this developmental phase by offering opportunities to experience extremes. Main lesson blocks cover history–especially revolutions in political systems, human rights, and economic life–with a focus on practical means to realize idealism. In the course History and Art, students explore changing views of beauty; in Comedy and Tragedy. They experience how the soul expresses itself through the dramatic arts. In the sciences, students study the biology of the senses, the physics of heat and electricity, chemistry, and geology. Math includes algebra, descriptive geometry, permutations, and probability, along with linear equations. In these studies, students observe and measure what is taking place, gaining focus through concrete and tangible avenues of thought.
Faculty
The teaching force is composed of licensed, experienced and dedicated teachers who are graduates of premier teacher’s institutions. At the Basic Education, teachers handle specialized subjects based on their area of specialization/preparation, thus allowing them to share their knowledge to the maximum level. They have committed themselves to nurture, train and mold young individuals to become responsible and useful citizens.
Facilities
Equipped with stimulating facilities like the playground, air conditioned science and computer laboratories make the students’ learning fun-filled and invigorating. The state-of-the-art Kinetics Centrum and Artists’ Hall for school’s various activities are all meant to create a meaningful learning experience.
Co-Curricular Activities
Side by side with the school academic program, BC Basic Education program provides students with various and well-thought of activities that geared toward attaining a balanced school life. These activities are deliberately spread out all throughout the school year. These are: Nutrition Week Celebration, Language Week, United Nations Celebration, Educational Field Trips, Christmas Party, Teachers’ Day, and Kaleidoscope/Musicale.
Recognitions
The Department of Education, through its pool of educational experts, has granted the school with the government permit to operate. On its initial year of operation, the school has obtained a remarkable high academic rating of its students’ achievement level in three major areas: English, Science and Math. The students got the ratings of Above Average, Superior and Excellent in three assessed content areas. The said assessment was conducted by the Center for Educational Measurement.
